New Handles, New Designs, and New Teapots

9/2/2012

Trying some new designs for handles.....Ive been trying to focus on the negative space of the handle and the area of attachment to the cup.
I had been working hard on feeling comfortable with throwing square plates. My friend Lisa York had visited china recently and I decided to put the bamboo brush she gifted me to hard work. I took inspiration from my latest print in my sketchbook to create a simple, but elegant design on the plates with a flashing slip. Plans to use wax over the slip design with a shino glaze in the soda kiln will hopefully bring great results.
I've always enjoyed making teapots but never felt very confident in making them and their success. This week I was inspired by a teapot by Judith Duff, and even if they arent the best teapots, I learned so much about handles, spouts, and the process of assembling a teapot.

I too have been looking at the different earthy ones that the different clays bring out. I for one can say you are amazing at your work. Don't ever forget that. The first big bowl you taught me you said the same exact thing to me! I have been doing handles also but not so sure about stepping out of my zone into the realm of teapots and huge bowls/pots. I remember walking into The Little Pottery Shop and my jaw just drops at all the intricate colors and wood/soda firings that you all do. I can't say how happy and excited I am with learning what you and my present teacher are teaching me. My heart is overwhelmed with happiness! Btw the wedding bowl for my friend brought happy tears to their eyes as they just sat there holding the bowl that I made for them. Thank you for helping me find my true passion in my life and for helping me make new friends! Keep up the great work and I hope to hear from you soon. Lots of hugs from me! Tell Tammy and others I say hi and that I miss you all but am remembering every word that you have said. Aka centering try this or try this. :) still wearing my sunglasses when I drive and get to my destination !
